Got back from the capital to find my new book has came! I'm excited to read this book because I have sneaked through a few pages in book stores and it is like a story telling book going through the ins and outs of the world of Typography. This book will come in hand for Unit 9.

So I was in London from 14.02.2012-16.02.2012 with Rick and it was brilliant. I went to the south-bank Centre which is on Embankment in London. There was an exhibition of David Shrigleys work and we had to go. One of the weirdest eccentric designers I have ever heard of his work is clever and witty with illustrations that could cause concern to some people! I think I went to see his work because it always fascinated me after reading a book on Shrigleys work. There is a real experimental power to all his work from illustrations to sculptures and installation pieces. The work itself is mind blowing and has gave me some perspective on the truth behind his work.

- The book has shown me that there is no right or wrong way of doing things. As a designer we can control the boundaries and break the rules if necessary to create beyond the required.
- This book has genuinely gave me a boost of self confidence. Straight talking and witty as anything the chapters challenge my opinion of what I believe to be true and what I think I can achieve.
This book was such a success I had to by the second one called "Whatever you think, think the opposite". The book is rather self explanatory of what it intends to do for the reader. Each page is art worked to a similiar style to the previous book and is just as unpredictable and daring as the last. This book encouraged me yet again but for different reasons. I have found that during my time in education I can think the opposite of others and my own opinion. This will help me to experiment with my ideas in the future and grasp a broader sense of knowledge when given a task.
Both books have shown me I am capable, and have gave me a sense of achievement to aim for. I do want to be better and these books have opened my mind and made the impossible seem very possible. Funny what opening a book can do for you.

Well Christmas has been and gone and in less than a week I am back at college. I have been doing work whilst on holiday which is great so I wont be rushing like a maniac before deadline day! I came across an interesting page on The Design Museum's website and it sparked interest to me being the designs of the year 2012. This is an exhibition running from February on wards and gives me a chance to get some fresh inspiration and some creative juices will flow from this! I am going to attend the museum when were off for a week or so in February so I will report back with my findings when done so :)

Sunday is a boring day and miserable and drizzly as usual. Being Sunday I popped on Facebook and noticed Graham Jones was selling prints at Night and Day cafe in the Northern Quarter. Graham Jones is a great designer who I aspire to greatly. Mostly myself I am interested in his typography skills and layout. I went down and bought a print anyway and it looks fab! A nice quote on it too which will now go on my wall to, to keep me going and motivated when I think I'm just not getting anywhere. Thanks Graham! 1 out of 5 prints as well which I'm happy about too.

So today I went to the Uclan university open day. I went to have a look at the campus, Preston as an area and see what I could find out about a top up. Preston in my opinion is miserable. From my personal experience, as a public transport commuter the journey from getting off the train to walking to the university isn't an enjoyable one. No life. It was raining so that did not help at all but as far as the university goes it reminds me off MMU. We got to chat one on one with the graphic design tutor there and I would say if I had the opportunity to go I would be put on to the 2nd year. I do feel though that the work that was shown to me I am already working at the same level there 2nd years are therefore I would have to decline an offer to take the 2nd year again. I will only take a 2nd year place if a. I can not get in anywhere else so what do I have to lose or b. the work is of a much more greater and higher standard than mine. So far Uclan does not tick the boxes for me because Manchester really is a great city to be in. I'm saying this because I have done all the researching and open day visiting before and I will always come back to my final decision on Manchester until I see something truly amazing. London would be a great place to study but financial issues are stopping me. I will say that Uclan do have some great industry contacts in pl;ace including Ben Casey from The Chase! When the tutor said Ben Casey works aside him to see students and no 1st years even turned up I was dissapointed for him. But never the less they do have some great contacts to fall back on.

A campaign from the well known Benetton. Benetton are famous for controversial ads and this one certainly draws your attention in. Poster showing world leaders locking lips to promote UNHATE. UNHATE is a campaign running to open up our eyes and show the world that hatred is unnecessary and can be put a stop to. Powerful images with a shocking yet couldn't be more true concept. This was featured on Creative Review and to be honest I haven't seen Benetton do a campaign like this for a long time. I can say that I find this image wrong but the bigger picture Benetton are always portraying in there ads is incredibly powerful.

This is a website link to Kai & Sunny who are a design duo. There work is currently featured on the new edition of Little White Lies front cover. I decided to check out there work and find it extremely inspiring. There work ranges from illustration, a selection of advertising and print based work. They have won a D&AD award which is a huge accomplishment and there work is definitely eye catching to say the least.

So I blogged a while ago about a Mercedes Benz SMART brief I did as part of my first year on my Graphics & advertising course. I’m now in my 2ND year just started back, and today I was delighted and quite frankly shocked with the news that my group won the smart brief !!!! It felt so rewarding when I heard the news. I am very proud of my group for coming up with the concept & the 100% smart strap line. There is an event going on and as part of the brief. Our work is now going to be on a real smart car! I cant wait to see my work really out there. So privileged right now, to have had such an opportunity. If You want to see the ad, check it out on my Tumblr with the Mercedes SMART campaigns. 100% SMART.

David Airey is a Graphic Designer, and this link is for all design students, not just Graphic Design students. Some insightful info on here guys :) I think that everyone can benefit from some advice that people freely offer out, its a priveledge seeing as were all trying to shine and head in this direction.
British Library Exercise
I designed two poster’s as part of an exercise in class, to see how well we could layout endless amounts of text with constraints of only 2 colours, few typefaces and few weights & sizes. I personally think I did a good job, using pastel colours. The first poster is one I did in class, set Portrait and with a time scale of 3 hours I did decide to touch it up at home and here it is. The second poster is one I decided to do whilst getting to grips with layout. Landscape surprisingly seemed easier and I was a lot more creative with my headline type. I am developing a better understanding everytime I walk into class, and leave with the ability to design work to a high standard. I hope you enjoy!
Wim Crouwel Exhibition Poster
This is an exhibition poster for the design museum from a chidren’s competition. I decided I wanted to work on this competition myself, but its taken me quite a while. I went for a simple 2 colour block poster with a minimal look. The Yellow really pops out. Anyway Hope you enjoy!
Winning Pitch Brief
So another piece of work that I did for an assignment where I designed a stationery set for a business consultancy in the North West called The High Growth Foundation. The logo was designed from all the research and client meetings we had. I then did ALOT of idea generation, word generation. Anything. I then felt that using geometric shapes to show the company as a growing significance to the North-West and as a consultancy they are growing more and more. The stationery set is designed to the tone of voice, and specifics we researched on based on the company as a whole. The colour is green for a reason, as I feel it’s fresh, vibrant and the logo itself looks just as good in black. The type I used is Helvetica. No particular reason why I just believe it has its place. Anyway I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the few in the class to pitch my set to the company. Very anxious day for me but none the less, a very satisfying day for me. I finally felt that day that my work is capable of standing out and getting somewhere.
SMART/Mercedes Brief
So I’ve not put that much work up of my own really on Tumblr, but these specific pieces were done as a team in my last assignment I did on my Graphic’s course, the advertisement side. The class was split up into teams and this piece I’m showing is my favourite in particular. We researched into advertisement and came across The Economist in our findings. We were asked as a group to advertise for Mercedes-Benz SMART dealership in Manchester. The idea to mimic The Economist seemed strong at the time and still does, for the fact we were attracting the socio-demographic ABC-1category as our target audience. (Urbanites) This particular group is the part of society who are all middle class upwards, in employment and know a thing or two about technology. Always on the move with no real free time. As you can see the advertisement is a running campaign. This campaign could keep rolling. The idea came across when we were thinking of famous people who are seen as maybe role models in society, and looked up to highly in today’s world. We used the colours of the logo for SMART itself, in the campaign, and I found a font that replicated the SMART type quite well. Using the quotes was a very clever idea for my team, and after weeks and weeks of grinding teeth and pulling out hair with idea generation I believe this is the strongest campaign we came up with as a team. This campaign based on the target audience works well for people always on the move such as placing the ad in a metro newspaper. This way when commuting the Urbanites themselves will see the ad with the little time they have to themselves. Well done to Stuart Harvey, Sophie Ireland, Tinashe Muzengi & myself.
Penguin Brief
This is my Penguin Award Adult Book cover, for One Hundred Years Of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I used photo manipulation, in the style of a montage to portray a surreal look. One of the main themes in the book is based around time, so I wanted to focus on this theme. Hope You like it.
